It begins
On Saturday, March 23, we begin. The upper Mississippi is under 2+ feet of snow, the lakes that the river passes through have 20 inches of ice on them and we will not have open water in the north until May (we hope we do then), but the river calls and this year is our year of trying to get on the entire river on as many different vessels as possible. Daily post on Full Length Mississippi Facebook page will provide lots of insights and photos, and this blog, which appears on our website http:fulllengthmississippi.org will be updates regularly as well. Tell people to follow the fun.
On March 23 we go on the Queen of the Mississippi from New Orleans to Memphis.
We will actually do this trip twice and in between we are working on getting on to an ocean going vessel to get to the end of the river. Stops in St Francisville, Vicksburg, Natchez, Oakley Plantation and Memphis.
We hope to return to the headwaters in May and canoe from the source.
After 300 + miles we will ride on an electric boat by Go-Float
We will then join Wilderness Inquiry on their Voyageur Canoe brigade.
Hop on a paddle board through St Paul to Hastings
Ride a motor boat to Lake Pepin with Bill Bixby
Thanks to Hansen's Harbor we will sail the large lake
And ride a pontoon boat
Back on the canoe and fishing boats. In Wisconsin we join the Upper Mississippi River NWR biologists for a day.
Heading south to Iowa-Illinois where we join the Living Lands and Waters on their clean up the river barge.
We are still working on details for a towboat and barge ride.
And in the Fall we will complete our journey on a large hand made canoe back in the southern waters with Quapaw Canoes.
And we hope that there are more boats that get added to this spring - fall adventure on the Great River.
Oh - and by the way - we will be using the bike for a shuttle vehicle on many stretches this year and giving this section a float, paddle, and pedal combination.

What a great adventure you have planned! When did you start making these plans? I wouldn't even know where to begin...when and if you have time...I would be interested on where to begin planning a long journey such as this one.
